Title: « Recycled Portraits »

Year of production : 2013 – 2014

Edition: unique pieces

Technique / materials : Oils on canvas

A series of large-format paintings made with oil on canvas featuring portraits of famous or anonymous individuals.

These porters are inspired by photographs retouched and manipulated by the computer, which transforms the image conveyed into a simple tool, emptying the subject represented from all legitimacy as a register of the real.

Images gleaned from the incessant flow of advertising and media production, which thus become a new form of pollution, are isolated and mixed computerically with images of the rebuses of our consumer society.

These recycled portraits, these penetrable figures, these empty bodies, are engaged in a recomposition versus decomposition where there will always be a question of incompletion, postulating a disenchanted vision of the current socio-economic system.

Use of a so-called technique « classic » (in the case of oil paint), revisited through new technologies, seeks to render this iconographic recycling a « a/ » which is defined as the specific character of the art work which is unique, linked to a specific place and which is part of history: « the only appearance of a distant, whatever its proximity » (W. Benjamin).
