Born in Santiago, Chile, the artist mixes digital with painting in his creative process, making dialogue in his compositions on screen and canvas, virtual and material, pixel and pigment.
After recovering images from magazines, he makes collages in which fragments of these documents are associated. He then digitizes them to optimize their hybridization and then transcribes the result obtained on a sometimes gigantic canvas. This results in compositions of appearance and ambiguous materiality.
These paintings then reveal stains which, if they do not raise again from the frame of the magazines or pixels, nevertheless parasitize the image and colonize the oil-painted areas where they continue to show the artist's gesture. Digital use also allows the painter to perform juxtapositions of subjects. Thus under the bodies and faces are often dilapidated places or piles of waste. In the portraits, the rubbish cans come close to them, when they are guessed from ladders with indistinct functions.
Paul Claudel saw the Dutch houses of 17th century paintings as architectural transcriptions of the human body. Marko Echeverria realizes this vision at the hour of a virtuality that enriches but also disturbs the real. Here, places and bodies merge as reality and virtuality on the window of our Smartphones without which we no longer know how to live.
After having stopped painting to make video compositions which again questioned the mix and digitized gesture, he returns this year to the canvas but this time using oil sticks that he makes himself to ensure a very rich range of shades with all shades of grey. Black then pop up from faces to identities again hybrid and multiple. Digital portraits that question the contemporary subject. Or when the person becomes this Greek persona again, that mask of the theatre worn by the ancient actors as it changes today fromavatar.
